To do what, most push lawn mowers have more power than that.

I find it strange that they bothered with a twin cylinder at such a small displacement.

Ooh it’s OHV too. 260cc should have some reasonable torque. This would be perfect in some sort of homebrew zombie apocalypse survival ATV.

Makes sense to me actually, I bet it’s super understressed. I once had a 17hp single that sounded like it was going to explode it was working so hard, this is just the opposite.

I believe it’s what you do with the power. A little 5 hp go kart can do a whole lot more than a 5hp lawnmower.

6 hp is about 4.5 kW, which can run quite a lot of electrical stuff. Hell, as a generator, it’ll charge something like a Nissan Leaf at 15 miles of range (EPA combined) per hour. (That’s hideously inefficient, mind you, but you could do it.)
Alternately, it’ll get a scooter up to useful speeds - industrial motors were common in scooters up through the 1960s or so, and this could probably get you into the 50 mph ballpark with enough streamlining - the Salsbury Model 85 claimed 50 with 6 hp in the late 1940s:

Yeah, but 6 hp (and apparently it’s actually closer to 7-8 hp on a dyno) on 260 cc wouldn’t be stressed badly on a single, either. And, it’s a 360 degree crank, so it’s not like they’re doing this for reduced vibration - smoother power pulses, maybe.
Now, where it’s really understressed is, the military’s only rating it for 3 hp, it seems.

keep in mind also that more power=more heat to get rid of. This thing would have to stay cool both in Alaska in January and the desert in July.

I’d bolt it to a bench and start it. Beyond that? No idea. Just fool around with it.

I fooled with many such engines when I was in the Army. They had little four-cylinders as well. My guess would be that a two-cylinder engine would hold up longer than a one-cylinder. But it’s only a guess.

And there’s that...
These things
howl
, as well. You could hear one running a mile away, literally.

Perhaps. But it’s meant to run at a steady RPM.

Generator then?

Typically, in my experience.

Hook it up to a CVT then...

I’ve got a 1941 Evinrude 3.3 HP outboard that is twin cylinder, just the way things used to be designed
